Hormone Therapy After Menopause: Finding Relief with Juanita Kahler at DCH
October 8, 2026
Waking up with night sweats. Dealing with hot flashes during the day. Experiencing vaginal dryness that makes intimacy uncomfortable. These concerns can be difficult to talk about, especially when you feel you should simply accept them as part of getting older.
Your comfort deserves attention at every age.
At Decatur County Hospital, Juanita Kahler, WHNP-BC, provides personalized women’s healthcare with more than 15 years of experience. DCH’s women’s health services include evaluation and treatment of menopause, giving women a place to discuss their symptoms and explore care close to home.
What Is Hormone Replacement Therapy?
Menopausal hormone therapy, often called hormone replacement therapy or HRT, uses prescription hormones to help relieve certain menopause symptoms.
Systemic therapy, such as pills, patches or gels, treats symptoms throughout the body, particularly hot flashes and night sweats. Women who still have a uterus generally need progesterone or another progestogen along with systemic estrogen to protect the uterine lining.
For vaginal dryness or painful intercourse, low-dose vaginal estrogen may provide targeted relief with much less absorption into the bloodstream. The appropriate treatment depends on the symptoms being addressed.
Is Hormone Therapy an Option for Older Women?
The decision requires an individual discussion. Benefits generally outweigh risks more favorably for healthy women who begin treatment before age 60 or within 10 years of menopause. Starting later calls for additional caution because health risks increase with age.
Starting therapy and continuing an existing prescription are different decisions. Ongoing treatment should be reviewed regularly. Risks can include blood clots, stroke and, with some regimens, breast cancer. Your medical history, symptoms and treatment type all matter.
Even if hormone therapy is not appropriate, you can still ask about other ways to find relief.
A Conversation with Juanita
Juanita’s approach to women’s healthcare centers on listening, building trust and helping patients make informed decisions. An appointment offers an opportunity to discuss menopause concerns openly, including symptoms you may have felt uncomfortable bringing up before.
Come prepared to describe what you are experiencing, how often it happens and how it affects your daily life. You might ask:
- Could these symptoms be related to menopause?
- Is hormone therapy appropriate for my age and health history?
- Would treatment for vaginal symptoms be different from treatment for hot flashes?
- What other options could help?
- How would we evaluate whether treatment is working?
You do not need to arrive knowing which treatment you want. The first step is explaining what has changed and what you would like help with.
