Dr. Daniel Reinhardt

For many physicians, medicine is a career path. For Dr. Daniel Reinhardt, it feels more like the culmination of a life built on service, discipline, and purpose.
Long before he was repairing hips and knees in operating rooms, Reinhardt graduated with merit from the United States Naval Academy followed by flying missions for the United States Navy.
A Kansas City native, Reinhardt spent 12 years serving as a Naval Flight Officer, flying P-3C Orion aircraft from Hawaii and completing more than 100 combat missions during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Later, he served as an Assistant Professor of Naval Science at the University of Notre Dame, teaching engineering, weapons systems, and leadership to future military officers.
That chapter alone could define a remarkable career. Instead, it became the foundation for another.
Today, Reinhardt is known as a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in hip and knee replacement surgery, including advanced direct anterior hip replacement techniques and robotic-assisted joint procedures.
His journey into medicine was anything but ordinary.
After leaving active military service, Reinhardt attended Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, graduating in the top quartile of his class and earning induction into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He later completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Kansas Medical Center, where he received both the Kim Templeton Outstanding Teaching Award and the Betty & Federico Adler Research Award.
The awards speak to excellence, but they also hint at another defining part of Reinhardt’s personality: he is, at heart, both a student and a mentor.
Patients often arrive in his office after years of pain. Some have stopped golfing. Others can no longer climb stairs comfortably, work on the farm, or simply keep up with grandchildren. Reinhardt sees orthopedic care not as fixing joints, but as restoring independence.
That philosophy has helped shape his approach to surgery.
Reinhardt has become especially known for direct anterior hip replacement, a minimally invasive procedure performed through the front of the hip rather than the side or back. The approach allows surgeons to work between muscles instead of cutting through them, often leading to less pain and quicker recovery in the early weeks after surgery.
But despite the advanced techniques and technology, Reinhardt’s focus remains deeply personal.
In interviews and physician profiles, he consistently talks less about procedures and more about quality of life. He emphasizes helping patients return home sooner, reducing reliance on narcotic pain medication, and getting people “back to normal life quicker.”
That perspective resonates strongly in rural communities, where physical mobility is often directly tied to independence.
At Decatur County Hospital in Leon, patients now have access to Reinhardt’s orthopedic expertise much closer to home. Rather than traveling hours to larger metropolitan hospitals, residents can receive specialized orthopedic care in their own community.
And while his résumé includes elite medical training and military leadership, Reinhardt himself seems grounded in simpler things.
Outside the operating room, he enjoys spending time with family, golfing, and cheering on Navy football, the Kansas City Chiefs, and the Royals.
Perhaps that balance explains why patients often describe him as approachable and reassuring despite his impressive background.
In many ways, Reinhardt represents a rare combination: the discipline of a military officer, the intellect of a scholar, and the compassion of a hometown physician.
For Decatur County and surrounding communities, that means access not only to advanced orthopedic procedures, but to a doctor whose life story reflects service in every sense of the word.
Dr. Daniel Reinhardt currently provides orthopedic surgery services through Decatur County Hospital and also practices with Kansas City Orthopedic Alliance. His specialties include hip and knee replacement, general orthopedics, fracture care, reconstructive surgery, and robotic-assisted joint replacement procedures.
