Bringing Hope Closer to Home During Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month
May 28, 2026
June is recognized as Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month. It’s a time dedicated to raising awareness, supporting families, and sharing advances in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease. For many families, Alzheimer’s is more than a diagnosis; it is a daily journey that affects memory, independence, and quality of life. As the disease progresses, patients and loved ones often search for options that can provide hope and help preserve meaningful moments for as long as possible.
Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive brain condition that worsens over time. Researchers believe the disease may occur when harmful proteins called amyloid proteins build up in the brain, creating amyloid plaque that damages brain cells. While there are different forms of amyloid proteins, all can contribute to the decline in cognitive function associated with Alzheimer’s disease.
Today, new treatment options are creating encouraging possibilities for patients diagnosed in the early stages of the disease. One of those advancements is LEQEMBI, an infusion therapy designed to work in two important ways: by targeting harmful amyloid proteins and helping remove existing amyloid brain plaque. In an 18-month clinical study involving patients with early Alzheimer’s disease, LEQEMBI was shown to slow the progression of the disease.
While there is currently no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, slowing progression can make a meaningful difference in the lives of patients and families. More time recognizing loved ones, maintaining routines, and preserving independence can have a lasting impact.
To help make this treatment more accessible, Decatur County Hospital now offers in-house Alzheimer’s infusion services close to home. Patients can receive care in a comfortable, welcoming setting without the stress of traveling long distances for treatment. Our specially trained infusion nurses are fully equipped to administer this innovative therapy with compassion, expertise, and individualized attention.
The hospital’s infusion center is designed to serve up to ten patients at a time, creating a convenient and supportive environment for those undergoing treatment. By offering advanced therapies locally, we hope to ease the burden on families while ensuring patients receive the highest level of care possible.
During Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month, we encourage our community to learn more about brain health, recognize the early signs of Alzheimer’s disease, and support those affected by memory-related conditions. Advances in treatment continue to bring hope, and access to compassionate care close to home can make all the difference.
