Removing Barriers to Care: Understanding Healthcare Transportation in Decatur County

Access to healthcare does not begin when a patient enters a clinic or hospital. For many people, especially those living in rural communities, care begins with a much simpler but often overlooked challenge: getting to the appointment in the first place.

In Decatur County, transportation can be one of the most significant barriers to healthcare. Recognizing this challenge, Decatur County Hospital (DCH) introduced a local transportation option designed to help residents attend medical appointments when travel becomes difficult.

Why Transportation Matters in Healthcare

Reliable transportation is closely tied to health outcomes. When patients cannot get to appointments, they may delay preventive screenings, miss follow-ups, or struggle to manage chronic conditions.

In rural counties like Decatur County, several factors can make transportation difficult:

  • Long distances between towns and medical facilities
  • Limited public transportation options
  • Weather or seasonal travel challenges
  • Family members who live far away or cannot provide rides
  • Mobility limitations that make driving unsafe

When these barriers exist, patients may postpone care or skip appointments entirely which can lead to worsening health issues that could otherwise be managed earlier.

Healthcare providers increasingly recognize that addressing transportation challenges is part of delivering effective care.

A Community Approach to Healthcare Transportation

To address this need locally, Decatur County Hospital has implemented two different transportation vans for Decatur County  and surrounding areas.

The program was developed after community members identified transportation as a major healthcare barrier during the county’s Community Health Needs Assessment, a process used to better understand local health challenges.

How the Transportation Service Works

The transportation program operates as a community service designed specifically for healthcare visits.

Key details include:

  • Available for Decatur County residents and surrounding areas who have healthcare appointments at DCH
  • Free transportation to appointments at DCH
  • Advance scheduling required, typically at least 24 hours before the appointment
  • First-come, first-served scheduling through DCH
  • Operating hours: Monday through Friday, approximately 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The vehicles are designed with accessibility in mind. They include a lift system for wheelchair users and space for multiple passengers, allowing individuals with mobility challenges to travel safely to their healthcare visits.

Supporting Patients Across the County

The transportation service is available to residents in all towns throughout Decatur County and has already served hundreds of patients. Over 6 years of operation, the program provided more than 13,000 rides and traveled nearly 150,000 miles transporting patients to medical care.

Patients who use the service represent a wide range of needs and ages. Some are older adults who no longer drive. Others are individuals recovering from surgery or managing chronic conditions that make travel difficult. The service is also used by assisted living residents and individuals whose families live outside the area.

For many families, the service provides reassurance that loved ones can still attend appointments even when personal transportation is unavailable.

A Broader View of Access to Care

Programs like healthcare transportation illustrate an important shift in how DCH thinks about patient care.

Traditionally, hospitals focus primarily on the services delivered inside the facility such as diagnostics, treatments, surgeries, and follow-up visits. Today, DCH increasingly recognize that social factors such as transportation, housing, and access to resources can significantly influence health outcomes.

When transportation barriers are addressed, patients are more likely to:

  • Attend preventive care visits
  • Keep follow-up appointments after hospitalization
  • Manage chronic conditions consistently
  • Seek care earlier when symptoms appear

These small changes can have a meaningful impact on long-term health and quality of life.

Keeping Care Close to Home

As a critical access hospital serving the region, Decatur County Hospital focuses on providing care close to home whenever possible. The hospital offers a wide range of services including outpatient specialty clinics, rehabilitation, imaging, and inpatient care to reduce the need for long-distance travel for routine medical needs.

Transportation services are one way the community continues working to ensure that these healthcare resources remain accessible to the people who need them.
