DCH Corner – Leon Community Meals Program

Almost one year ago, representatives of multiple community organizations banded together to revamp the community meal site program.  The Leon City Council, Decatur County Board of Supervisors, Decatur County Hospital, Community Health Centers of Southern Iowa (CHCSI) and Decatur County Public Health partnered to revive and improve the Leon Community Meal Program.

Quality food is now provided by Decatur County Hospital, and served at the community center, as well delivered to residents who wish to remain at home. Meals are available to all residents of the community, of any age.

With just a phone call to 641-446-4433, anyone can enjoy a delicious meal and good fellowship at the Leon Community Center.  The cost for a meal is $4.00 for those ages sixty and over, or $6.00 for all others.  Lunch is served each weekday at 11:30 am, except on holidays. However, the program offers home meal delivery for any regular diners during some holidays.

In order for meals to be prepared in the correct quantity and ensure proper nutritional balance for all guests, please call 641-446-4433 at least 24 hours in advance if you plan to attend. For example, if you plan to attend on Friday, please call to reserve your place by noon on Thursday. This is necessary so that an accurate number of meals can be prepared. If you’re interested in the home delivery option, please make that clear in your phone call.

Are you a community member who is interested in supporting this program, but don’t have a need to purchase a meal for yourself? Consider purchasing a punch card for a family member, friend, or to donate to members of the program who need assistance.  Each punch card can be used for 10 meals.

Want to be a part of this adventure? The meal delivery system relies solely on volunteers. The board could always use more volunteer drivers to pick up, package and deliver the meals.  Any level of commitment is appreciated. Once a month? Great! Once a week? Even better! In most cases, the volunteer schedule can accommodate your schedule so you can volunteer on the best day of the week or month for you. Not to worry… free training is provided!
