Med/Surg and ED Nurse Manager

Position: Nurse Manager

Day/Hours: Full-Time

Summary:The Med/Surg-ED Manager is a Registered Nurse that provides leadership and guidance to the health care team. The Nurse Manager serves as a resource to staff, physicians, and patients. Serves as the front-line manager for Med/Surg and the Emergency Departments.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Current unrestricted Iowa RN license, BSN preferred
• BLS, ACLS, PALS, TNCC and Mandatory Reporter training required
• Minimum of 3 years’ Med/Surg and/or ER experience required
• Minimum of 2 years’ Med-Surg and/or ER management experience, preferred

Essential Functions

Leadership:

  • Serves as a resource in identifying and/or solving administrative or operational problems.
  • Anticipates actual/potential problems that may occur on their shift and sets priorities accordingly.
  • Supervises staff in each department of responsibility.
  • Assigns and schedules the staff in each department of responsibility. Establishes staffing patterns; review and monitor work schedules and duty assignments of personnel, and effect changes as needed.
  • Reviews time off requests, approves timecards, and assists with payroll processing for personnel in assigned departments.
  • Assists Director of Nursing with hiring, firing, and disciplinary decisions for direct report staff members.
  • Ensures timely completion of departmental chart audits and follow-up action to correct deficiencies, as appropriate
  • Monitors staff orientation and training. Identifies potential education needs and works with the Nurse Educator and/or appropriate personnel for provision of training.
  • Assists in creating a positive work environment by the mentoring of staff/students and working with staff to facilitate initiatives that strive for positive outcomes.
  • Acts as a positive role model and promotes the provision of a positive patient experience.
  • Actively involved with supporting new initiatives.
  • Assists staff to interpret change in a positive manner.

Professional Growth:

  • Keeps professionally current by attending continuing education programs, workshops and/or independent research reading.

Communication:

  • Identifies problems situations and provides for immediate follow-up, documentation, and communication to appropriate department director.
  • Must have a high level of interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations.
  • Reports to administrator on call significant incidents/problems.
  • Demonstrates the ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing with all customers and team members.
  • Communicates pertinent care information and promotes a climate of teamwork at all levels.
  • Notifies appropriate Senior Leader of issues and concerns.
  • In a disaster situation notifies administrator on call. Functions as Incident Commander until administrator available.

Delivery of Care:

  • Responds to emergency situations (rapid response, code blue, trauma, etc) and assists as necessary.
  • Schedule shifts as needed based on needs of hospital
  • Primarily works flexible shifts to ensure adequate management coverage during off hours.
  • Assess patient care requirements in each department when making rounds within the hospital.
  • Ensures that after-hours care coordination and referrals to appropriate resource are completed.
  • Makes recommendations for improvements in processes, equipment and quality of care.
  • Assists staff to provide a safe work environment for patient care.
  • Consistently and independently follows established safety and infection control procedures. Intervenes in unsafe situations.
  • Meets or exceeds expectations of individuals for whom service is provided.
  • Assists physician and staff in admission criteria and assigning admission status to patients (observation vs admission).

Monitors status and safe operation of the facility and reports issues as needed.
