The Critical Access Hospital program was established by Congress through the Balanced Budget Act of 1997 in response to growing concerns about rural hospital closures across the United States. The goal was simple: help ensure people living in rural areas continue to have access to vital healthcare services.

To qualify for Critical Access Hospital status, hospitals must meet specific criteria, including:

• Being located in a rural area or serving a rural population
• Providing 24-hour emergency care services
• Maintaining 25 or fewer inpatient beds
• Keeping the average length of stay for acute care patients at 96 hours or less

These requirements allow Critical Access Hospitals to remain focused on delivering the services their communities need most while working closely with larger healthcare systems when more specialized care is necessary.

By helping patients better manage chronic conditions where they live, the program reduces unnecessary emergency room visits while improving overall health and quality of life.

We also understand that transportation can be one of the biggest barriers to receiving healthcare in rural communities. That’s why Decatur County Hospital partners to offer the Decatur County Healthcare Courtesy Van, providing free transportation for Decatur County residents and residents in surrounding counties traveling to healthcare appointments at Decatur County Hospital, Infinity Health clinics, and Decatur County Public Health. This community-driven program helps ensure that a lack of transportation never prevents someone from receiving the care they need.
