What Does It Mean to Be a Critical Access Hospital?

When people think about healthcare, they often picture large hospitals in metropolitan areas. But for many individuals and families living in rural communities, access to healthcare closer to home is essential. That’s where Critical Access Hospitals play an important role.

At Decatur County Hospital, we are proud to be designated as a Critical Access Hospital (CAH). While this designation may not mean much to the average patient, it has a significant impact on the care available right here in our community.

What Is a Critical Access Hospital?

The Critical Access Hospital program was established by Congress through the Balanced Budget Act of 1997 in response to growing concerns about rural hospital closures across the United States. The goal was simple: help ensure people living in rural areas continue to have access to vital healthcare services.

To qualify for Critical Access Hospital status, hospitals must meet specific criteria, including:

  • Being located in a rural area or serving a rural population
  • Providing 24-hour emergency care services
  • Maintaining 25 or fewer inpatient beds
  • Keeping the average length of stay for acute care patients at 96 hours or less

These requirements allow Critical Access Hospitals to remain focused on delivering the services their communities need most while working closely with larger healthcare systems when more specialized care is necessary.

Why Does This Matter to Patients?

For patients, Critical Access Hospital designation means healthcare is available closer to home.

Whether it’s emergency care, diagnostic imaging, laboratory services, outpatient procedures, rehabilitation, or specialty clinics, local access can make a meaningful difference in a person’s health journey. Traveling hours away for every healthcare need isn’t always practical, especially during emergencies or when managing chronic conditions that require ongoing care.

Receiving care locally also means being treated by providers and staff who understand the unique needs of the community they serve.

Supporting Rural Healthcare

One of the biggest challenges facing rural hospitals is financial sustainability. Unlike hospitals in larger cities, rural hospitals often care for smaller populations while still maintaining essential services such as emergency departments, laboratory services, and imaging capabilities.

Critical Access Hospital designation provides a different Medicare reimbursement structure designed to help rural hospitals continue operating and investing in the services their communities depend on. This support helps hospitals remain strong and responsive to local healthcare needs.

More Than Emergency Care

While emergency services are a vital component of Critical Access Hospitals, many people are surprised to learn just how many services rural hospitals provide.

At Decatur County Hospital, our commitment extends beyond emergency care. We continue to expand access to specialty services, preventive care, rehabilitation, diagnostic testing, and other programs designed to improve the health and well-being of those we serve.

Our goal is to reduce barriers to care by offering high-quality healthcare options within our own community whenever possible.

Comprehensive Healthcare Close to Home

One of the greatest strengths of Decatur County Hospital is the range of healthcare services available right here in our community. Many people are surprised to learn that our hospital offers far more than emergency and inpatient care. In fact, our goal is to provide as much healthcare as possible close to home, reducing the need for patients to travel long distances for routine, specialty, and ongoing care.

Today, patients have access to a growing number of specialty clinics and healthcare services including:

Our commitment to caring for the community extends well beyond the walls of the hospital.

Through our Community Paramedicine Program, specially trained paramedics and rehabilitation professionals visit eligible patients in their homes to provide wellness checks, medication education, chronic disease management, fall prevention, home safety assessments, and care coordination. By helping patients better manage chronic conditions where they live, the program reduces unnecessary emergency room visits while improving overall health and quality of life.

We also understand that transportation can be one of the biggest barriers to receiving healthcare in rural communities. That’s why Decatur County Hospital partners to offer the Decatur County Healthcare Courtesy Van, providing free transportation for Decatur County residents and residents in surrounding counties traveling to healthcare appointments at Decatur County Hospital, Infinity Health clinics, and Decatur County Public Health. This community-driven program helps ensure that a lack of transportation never prevents someone from receiving the care they need.

Together, these services reflect what it truly means to be a Critical Access Hospital and not simply providing emergency care, but building a healthcare system that supports patients before, during, and after illness. Whether through preventive care, specialty services, rehabilitation, home visits, or transportation assistance, Decatur County Hospital is committed to removing barriers and bringing exceptional healthcare closer to home.
