DCH Announces 2019 DAISY Award Recipient

Amy Sherman, Chief Nursing Officer, announces Julie Benda, RN, Surgery Lead, as DCH’s 2019 DAISY Award Winner.

On Friday, May 10, during the DCH Nurses Week/Hospital Week BBQ, this year’s DAISY Award winner was announced.

The DAISY Award is an international recognition program that honors and celebrates the skillful, compassionate care nurses provide every day.  The nurses at DCH are all deserving of this award.  However, several people nominated one nurse this year and here is their story.

This nurse seeks out ways to improve her patient’s experience each day she works.  She is a resource for the surgical area and is always willing to help her fellow staff members.  She takes responsibility for all areas of the surgical practice by seeking out new ideas and staying current in her practice.

Her work with oncology patients is heartwarming and inspiring.  She has transformed the infusion department from a “medical treatment” area to a place of healing, warmth and caring.  She is kind, caring, helpful and patient.  She always puts her patients first.  She helps our cancer warriors fight a battle only they know with a caring smile and words of encouragement.  She has involved patients’ children to decorate the unit for holidays and has graduation parties for them on their last day of chemo.  She provides a holistic approach to caring for her patients.

Her concern for her patients’ comfort and well-being is known among the patients who find themselves thrust into an unknown and scary part of their life.

She is truly a HERO to many!

Thank you, Julie Benda, our 2019 DAISY nurse.
