Leon Community Meal Program: An Ongoing Adventure

Since July 2016, the new Leon Community Meal Program has been going strong. When changes were announced from the previous meal site operators, the community of Leon was called upon to make a quick and necessary move to improve and continue meals for our residents.  In less than thirty days, the community took responsibility of the meal site.

Without hesitation, the Leon City Council, Decatur County Board of Supervisors, Decatur County Hospital, Community Health Centers of Southern Iowa (CHCSI) and Decatur County Public Health made it possible to revamp the community meal program.  The end result is that quality food is provided by Decatur County Hospital, and served at the community center as well delivered to residents who wish to remain at home.

With the success of the program, the board is looking forward to how the community can be even better served by the Community Meal Program.  The board wants to be clear that meals are not limited to a certain group.  With just a phone call to 641-446-4433, anyone can enjoy a delicious meal and good fellowship at the Leon Community Center.  The cost for a meal is $4.00 for those ages sixty and over, or $6.00 for all others.  Lunch is served each weekday at 11:30 am.

Meals are served Monday through Friday unless there is a holiday. Please call 641-446-4433 at least 24 hours in advance so that an accurate number of meals can be prepared. If you’re interested in the home delivery option, please make that clear in your phone call.

If you’re a community member who is interested in supporting this program, but doesn’t have a need to purchase a meal for yourself, consider purchasing meal tickets for a family member, friend, or to donate to members of the program who need assistance.  Each punch card can be used for 10 meals.

Want to be a part of this adventure? The meal delivery system relies solely on volunteers. The board could always use more volunteer drivers to pick up, package and deliver the meals.  Not to worry… free training is provided!
